I usually just put my pieces in a gallon freezer ziplock filled with water.
However, am wondering.... do any of you use a vacuum sealer and just put a handful in a sealer bag and run the machine? Wondering if I can do this without adding water, like we do with steaks, and just vacuum seal the filets and not have to worry about all the water when thawing?
Thoughts?
I vacuum sealed the last ones I bagged. I did not plan on leaving them in the freezer very long
I vacuum seal all mine that aren't being eaten fresh. I found some from 2 years ago that were hidden under some other items and they were just as I put them in there. I actually get them cold first in the fridge, blot them lightly with a paper towel then in to the bag for sealing. If you put wet fillets in, the water will get sucked in to your unit and will possibly screw it up as well as messing with the sealing line on the bag. Dry and cold works great.
Good vacuum sealer! It's the only way I do it. Works Great!
I have been vacuum sealing mine for several years. Clean them, wash them, paper towel them dry and vacuum seal them. I know they will last two years.
They are also easy to thaw because of the absence of water.
I been vacuum packing fish for 20ish years.The last 10 or so I put my dry breading on quick freeze breaded fillets on cookie sheets,then vacuum pack them.....freezer to the dinner plate in 15-20 minutes;)
Vacuum works well and so does water in freezer bags as long as you make sure to get all the air out......I do both more water/freezer bags as it's cheaper......I also push most of the water out and it work very well.....
In the 1960s we put fillets in 1/2 gallon milk cartons added water and froze them.. Then things got more advanced and we used Ziploc bags.. I got a vacuum 10 years ago and use it 90% of the time. I prefer the vac sealer over Ziploc bags.. I add fillets, vac seal, flatten the bags and can stack them in freezer.. When I want fish the flat vac packs thaw out much faster than Ziploc bags with water. I also process my own deer and wild hogs and again the vac sealer works well for that too.
