Lightning Rod Rebuild
After many years of flawless service I had to give it a facelift. 6’6” in 2 piece and medium action with a soft tip that throws a 1/16 forever. Hands down my favorite utility rod for many species. The finish was separating from the windings and the cone front of the reel seat had been cracked and repaired 3 times, if memory serves. In removing the guides I found that it had been primed and colored. The porous nature of the blank means it will never be perfect and I didn’t remove the primer and color from the ferrule area or it would have seated deeper. I guess you’d say it has a personality. A 220 sanding sponge allowed me to lay it on the workbench and sand without creating flat spots. Tedious. Last weekend I put the handle and reelseat went on and what I’ve used as my signature wrap and coating went on today. High mounted guides but not torzite will go on soon. Here’s the pics and thanks for watching...... Skeet Attachment 400127
The bottom rod is the 6’ ultra light I finished last year. Had to get it out to get the thread count for the chevron wrap, which were done on 3/4” centers on the UL and 1/2” on the medium. I like the top one better, what do you think?

Thanks everyone and Jeff, I know I need a before and after pic. I got excited knowing what it was going to look like that I had it stripped before I even thought about the pic. Second time I’ve done that. Pretty much none of the guides had any coating on them that was yellow and separated from the thread it was supposed to be protecting. The handle had a conical cork forend that was the adjustable part of the reel seat. When it was built there was no gap between the blank and the cork, with the cork being pretty thin. It broke a couple of times and I finally opened the hole to allow movement of the blank and the issue was done. But it had three epoxy repairs by then and looked bad. Looks and fishes great now and I think it may even cast some better. I promise, before pics next time.
