UL Angler Dream Day

Epic day below Normandy Dam today!! I netted over 130 trout. Had 4 brood trout that went 20....18...18....and 17 inches. Many of the trout were at the 13 inch mark. Used a Bison colored Trout Magnet on a 1 gram Daiwa Gekkabijin jig head #10 hook. Rod was Abu Garcia UL Diplomat Extreme 6' 2" Horizontal Area Trout Rod with solid tip. Reel was Daiwa Ballistic FW LT 1000S-P spooled up with 2.3# test polyester with diameter .105mm. Had a section of FC leader with diameter of .117mm. I also used the Daiwa Iprimi XXUL today with some 7/10 gram spoons. Had to put it away as Normandy is eating my spoons. If you are looking for a rod that gives an insane amount of fun this is it. Had several 13 inch trout on the Iprimi.....while the battle was epic the rod really protects the 2.3# test ester. The trout were crushing the spoons. Landing trout this large on 2.3# test polyester line...in current.....is very hard to do. This was a day that goes in the memory bank’s for sure.

Joe years ago I was a trout bum. Then the right knee went bad....then spinal issues showed up....then the left hip went bad.....had it replaced....then spinal surgery. I’m able to stand for hours again now and it shows with the amount of time I’m spending on trout waters. I plan to get below Nickajack now that they have turned the flow down and get on the crappie and bluegill. From now until July if the day does not go well at Nickajack I can stop off at Normandy as I have to go by there to get home. The best of both worlds.....LOL.

Randy, I am also blessed with having some great nearby fisheries, and the past week I have been catching some nice fish, but not in those numbers!

PS: I am serious about riding up with my boat one day to Nickajack to fish my Alweld alongside the TM boat, see what the PLS can spot in the dead lock, and if I can yank any TN fish out with my hand-ties on the Limbertip. Note the WB run has been late here as well, just starting by reports in the Coosa, and already heating up hard down south. I can be there in 2 hours if you care to send a PM. I'll see if Scott wants to go, but he's a busy man, unlike me - unemployed and fancy-free!

Early April is probably best time in the spring for the dead lock. Of course late fall is great there also. I’m sure you could wear out the crappie that get down in the grates that I am not sure the HB can see. I will keep you posted as to when the fish show up. Was down there the other day and nothing....not a hit. TWRA has outdone themselves with the stocking on the Duck River this year. I think they have released about 18,000 up to this week. The biggest surprise is the number of brood trout they have put in...has to be in the hundreds. By late May these trout will have big bellies on them. The crawfish are out from there winter nap...or whatever the proper term is.....and the bottom of the river is covered in them. Will keep you posted...would love to meet up with you there.

used to chase trout myself , best air fish are the russian river rainbows
but to be sure some hatchery fish get pretty busy as well .
