Vertical jigging, I sometimes get a knot in my 10/2 PP with a split shot above my jig. 1/16 or 1/32 jig.
Am I dropping down to fast, or should I use a mono or flour leader? thanks in advance for your replies.

Either dropping down too fast, or jigging the bait too hard, or the split shot is too close to the jig :dono
Yeah, splitshot about 12in. away, need to go up another 6in.
I will slow everything else down.
is 1/4 oz to much splitshot weight?
Why not just use a heavier jig and no split shot?
I would think 12" would be sufficient. But you might want to flip the rig out aways & let it pendulum back, rather than drop it straight down. Some jig/plastics will spin falling thru the water column, and that may be causing the lighter jig to wrap the main line as it's being taken down by the heavier split shot ... then your jigging motion may be creating the knots. :donoQuote:

When I use a split shot above a jig, it's usually a #5 (~1/16oz) ... when I use one to fish live bait on a hook, it's usually a #4 (~1/8oz) -- in either case it's mostly for <20fow. But, I'm not a vertical jigger, plus I don't know how deep you're trying to fish.

I quit using split shot because I think that pinching the line with the shot inherently weakens the line. I use small slip weights that resemble worm weights above a surgeons knot or swivel tied to a fluorocarbon leader. These weights are tapered on both ends, and therefore less likely to snag other parts of the rig.

I’ve always felt split shot weakens the line as well. Usually use heavier jig for what I need. I like to have direct contact to my bait, split shot ahead of bait I feel it instead of bait.
