Crappie lights

As far as crappie fishing at night Is it better To use a submersible light Or would LED strips Down the side of the boat under the rub rail Be just as good . I was trying to lean toward the strip light to avoid cords laying Loosely in the boat And be able to just Turn on a switch Once on the Fishing area But was not sure if Light shining into the water from above The waterline Would have the same penetration As a light being submerged. I had thought that More light possibly would be reflected off the water line Instead of going into the water so. just wondering if anyone else has used the LED lights to Shine in the water and what the results are versus Something being submerged.

I have both. Strong green led on end of 20 foot cord that plugs into cigarette lighter as well as bright green led strips down both sides. Seems to work well.

Have you ever tested One against the other or do you just use them in conjunction with one another. I like the idea of the LED strip just Did not know how much light penetration that would be versus reflection. I have always used the submersible type lights I just thought the LED light strip was a pretty good idea especially when you don’t have to unwind and then rewind the submersible light cords.

I use them both. The side lights seem to attract lots of smaller bugs and things the minnows seem to like then the submersible light draws from this group plus other living bait stationed lower. The crappie remain in the periphery so I drop jigs and minnow or jigs with minnows on the edges. As long as the pickles don’t show up in force we can work that column of water. Beats what my dad used to fish with, headlight bulb in styrofoam. We caught lots of fish with that, though.

:Rofl ... that's what I've used for years, and prior to that it was a Coleman gas lantern hung over the side of the boat.

Last time I went fishing at night for Crappie I used the headlight/styrofoam and a couple of "blacklight" setups (with only the white bulbs on) ... and ran my start battery down so low it wouldn't start the big motor. :Doh: Luckily we weren't all that far from the launch ramp. A quick reach into my ditty bag to retrieve my jumper cables & we were on the trailer and headed home in just a few minutes. Should I ever decide to use that particular setup again .... an extra series 29 deep cycle battery will be loaded onboard, just for the lighting system.

I still use the old school floating lights....changed the bulbs from halogen to led though

I started out with the green led light strips under my pontoon. Used them for two years, they did a good job of pulling in minnows around the entire pontoon. I then bought a green underwater light for the front of the pontoon. I saw more minnows, etc at the front with the green underwater light than on the sides with the light strips. So I did not replace the light strips when they burnt out.

Thinking about the whole idea I may Put the LED strip lights under the rub rail And just use an underwater light for actually fishing. I think that the LED strip Will Help See the rods while keeping the Light At a minimum. I know it's comparing apples to oranges but It reminded me of shining a spotlight across the water . If the light shines on the water It just reflects up in the trees So I'm thinking that The LED strip shining into the water from above may very well do the same thing to a point.
