Southern Indiana crappie fishing

Retired in 2018 and started fishing. Bought my first boat (2018 Bass Tracker 175 TXW) and now I'm HOOKED but so much to learn. I have learned that crappie fishing is a ton of fun plus they are great to eat. Cleaned my first 25 crappie a few weeks ago from our own private neighborhood lake fishing off the bank.

I appreciate the Indiana forum. After reading the past posts, it makes me want to try other lakes within' a couple hour drive.

I've noticed its difficult to find private ponds/lakes to bank fish especially if you want to keep a few crappie for the freezer. I see several places near my house but not sure how to approach someone about fishing? Anyone have thoughts on this?

I am the same way about asking for permission. I hate rejection, but if you don't ask, the answer is always no. There is a nice freeway pond in the peoples back yard that I have never seen anyone fish. It is only about 1/2 mile from house, so it would be perfect for a quick evening trip. Closest boat ramp for me is probably 30 minutes away, not counting the time to get the boat out of the garage and hooked up. I will be keeping an eye on the responses and see if I can get up the courage to go ask.

Good luck,,was born and raised in Clay Co..and used to fish 100’s of strip pits,,,some where given to the state by Amal Coal Co. heavily fished outside Staunton and along I-70. Back in the 70’s I Never had to ask anybody permission. Slowly they were sold to private individuals and now all posted from Carbon IN thru Jasonville and Linton. In southwest Indiana you do have some pits east of Petersburg and south of there towards and below Jasper,,,check them out. State owns some for public to fish. Don’t know how hard they are hammered.

Have you tried Bluegrass FWA? The only fishing I've done in the Evansville area is on the river, but Bluegrass always catches my eye when I'm driving down 69. I think it's closed to fishing for waterfowl hunting until February though. I notice there's some parks there that offer public bank fishing; Moutoux Park, Garvin Park, and Diamond Valley to name a few. I've always wanted to try Huntingburg Lake but have never made it down. Yes .. Bluegrass is closed. Moutoux is the run off from the landfill so I'll pass on that one. Garvin, Diamond Valley, Helfrich or Golfmoor are not known for any crappie over 6". I like the way you are thinking but the search continues.

Try and get a Peabody pass those lakes got some big crappies in them

Not possible ... I called the coal company and they no longer allow fishing. Not even for employees.

Bluegrass is open now that waterfowl season is over and full of crappie. Lots of dinks but there is eaters in there for sure. You might have to walk across the kayaks to get to them but they are there. Seems more people are beating the banks for bass than crappie fishing.
