Been fishing this particular lake for years now and always seemed to catch about equal amount of white vs black crappie. Seems lately we have just been catching the white crappie. Where are the black crappie at? Have they moved to a different part of the lake? Moved deeper, shallower, etc... Just curious as the other day my buddy and I noticed everything we caught was white crappie. We were fishing the usual spots, laydowns, rocks, drop offs, etc. Any insight to this?
From my experience in the fall to winter the blacks move a little deeper and spread out more to isolated cover where as the whites tend to bunch up more on mid depth range brush, example would be the other day I caught 15 fish limit off one brush pile on a ledge from 12-23 ft deep all whites with one black that came off the bottom on the 23 ft side next day fished isolated cribs and brush in 23-27 ft water and the catch rate was 50-50 black and white,

Up here in NW Pa, I’m catching them in very shallow 41* water real close to the trunks on deadfalls. Only fishing three feet deep. Yesterday I found a school of 12” blacks there. Took my 20 fish limit and just threw back everything under 11”. I downsized my jig body and used a 1/32 head with no split shot under a tiny bobber just big enough to hold that jig. They were destroying that bait.

Hmm, interesting replies so far. Guess we just need to look a little harder for them. Everywhere we targeted and could see the fish on fish finders they were white crappie. Thanks for the replies.
We have been catching a few blacks in a lake that is dominate with white crappie. Like already stated we have continued to catch the white crappie 10-18 feet deep. While the brush we have fished in 22-30 foot of water has produced the blacks. I didn’t really put it all together until reading this post. But no that I recall we have not caught a black in any of the shallower spots.
