Buddy .... I'm gonna say Bluegill, just because there is no hint of any band of color around the black gill flap. They usually have a red or orange colored band around the end of the flap. It also looks to have a black spot at the tail end of the dorsal fins, which is another Bluegill trait. The blue cast under the eye / on the jaw is also a Bluegill trait.
The biologist here in SoCal told me this is Redear. that guy body color looks really light and similar to this. At first I really thought it was a Redear
The shape of the ear is completely different between the two.
And not a hint of yellow on the belly, a cracker trait. Can’t wait til the river slows down and comes out of the woods here so I can get back to em. I say ‘gill, but mostly I say sammich. He just the right size.
top fish is a hen bluegill , the spawner red ear is really noticeable as they get that black tiger striped belly when they spawn quite frequently .
