Caught 20 black crappie on brush in 20 feet of water. Tried all manners of jigs but no go. Only would hit minnows but hit them hard did they. Love catching blacks as they fight so hard and these had wide shoulders so will filet great. 10 were 11 inches, 5 were 12 to 13 inches and 5 were big boys at 14 inches. Lots of food for the winter (smile). Four brush piles was the answer. None from the weeds (normal location for crappie on this lake).

One step at a time. Had to get out of my comfort zone and try another lake. Even bought a Hero 8 but have not learned all about it yet. Did not even think of photos while catching fish (a new feeling). I will do better next time. One step at a time.Quote:

Congrats on the catch! Let me offer a suggestion when fishing with minnows I like to also use a jig below the minnow. I use it for weight and bait especially in summer. I use 1/4 and 1/8 Oz jigs when doing that and I find usually the smaller ones hit the minnow and I get the larger crappie on the jig. I would guess 70% of the time that is how it goes for me. I do remember one late evening I took my wife and we caught 28 with only 8 of them keepers and all of them came on the jig. I believe at times the smaller crappie getting after a minnow may get a larger one fired up and he takes the jig? Just my thoughts.
Oh and I don't use a large hook, usually a Gamakatsu #1 or #2 Drop Shot hook because they are small and lets the minnow swim better.

What a great idea although we currently have large crappie. Seldom do we catch one below the legal limit if 10 inches. We generally keep only those 11 inches or longer. Yesterday we went back to the different lake and ended up with 16 very nice black crappie along with a hefty Gasper Gou. Thanks so much for taking the, time to share your techniques and I will try that on the next trip.Quote:

Fear might not be an apt description. I can have my boat launched in 10 minutes from my house in a private park w/ramp versus one and a half hours to Lake LBJ or 45 minutes to Decker Lake. The word might be lazy or acknowledging my age and effort to launch but your observation is conceptually correct. I just need to make the extra effort to fish better waters rather than the comfort (although less productive) of fishing my home lake. Thanks, as always, for your insight and encouragement. I ascribe my continued efforts and love to fish for crappie to your initial observations, techniques, and encouragement you provided a mere few years ago. Again, thanks.

Some boys will take their rigs more than 2 hours from the house my friend to get on a hot bite . you might want to do a day trip once in a while , some lakes are flat out HOT certain times of the year ....just saying :highfive
Funny you say that, I grew up in Orange Texas, 90 miles South where I live now on Toledo Bend. Back when Rayburn and Toledo Bend opened myself and a few friends started coming up here every weekend. Then we read an article about night fishing for bass and we wanted to give that a try. Well we came up here every weekend for 10 years except for hunting season/winter. We would come up one afternoon and start fishing and would only stop to eat breakfast, maybe. Then late that afternoon would drive back home and it's amazing we didn't ever have a wreck, lol!Quote:
