A 400 FPC Crossbow Aint for Whimps

For years I have watched folks shooting Compound Bows on TV --- and anything that can go wrong with the shot sends the Arrow off into the wild blue yonder --- The deer ducking under the shot , not to mention some were so close you could reach out and touch a Yearling ... Sept 1 Archery opens,, a Month before Gun season. When I was a Teenager, My Brother and I had an old Recurve someone gave us. Our Forearms was like Hamburger from the String -- Vanes ripped off- Crooked Arrows -- It was gave to us because it was killing them to shoot the thing.. I Said I Ain't flinging no stick at no Deer.
I have not seen one single deer in the Daytime during Gun Season in 3 Years. It has been the same for My Trail Cameras ,, But the Hogs Raiding my feeders I would have needed a winch to move it... were there during bow season.
I Ain't Chunking sticks was my Moto -- I looked On Line - U Tube also has some good Info on CrossBows. There is something that Youth can use always to those that will Rip the Bottom out of the Bank Account . Midway USA Commercials Shooting Supplies Is where I purchased My Bear CrossBow Speed 400 Ft Per Second.. Not all Targets are Ok for Bolts traveling at that Speed,,,, the Bolt will go all way through. I had to go to EBay for my Block Target to Sight In the Scope. The Block is also good for Hunting Points.. I had to go Eat TWO BOWLS OF WHEATIES to pull the string back to load for shooting.. The Cocking Rope stretched and had to shorten twice pulling the string back to reload. The Target was hard on the Arrow because the Arrow went through the block so far the Vanes were buried too ... It took a Hammer to drive the Six Inches sticking out the back to get the Vanes out of the target Block.. If I had bought a larger block the Arrows would have become part of the Target --- I got it sighted in -- this year something should go in the Freezer,, before my Neighbors War begains

As a crossbow hunter for about 8 years now, let me offer you a piece of advise. Just because you get that extra FPS don't assume it translates into extra range in killing a deer. The reason is that crossbows are LOUD. Deer will duck the string on a crossbow sound more than a normal vertical bow. Therefore, I tend to use 40yds as my max range (and even then only when the deer is paying attention to something else).

I only know two people that owned a crossbow. Both bought very low power crossbows that they didnt keep,, the one my Nephew bought wound up in a pawn shop. My thought was a good Crossbow that if it ever needed a part ,, Bear Archery has been around a long time.. The UTube videos I watched never even came close to Burying the Bolt so deep the Veins were also imbeded.. Had I known I would have bought one with lower speed --- Also part of the reason I started this Post -- at 150 pounds It was putting a whopping on Me and the Bolt. Now I also know where I can get new Vanes put on my Arrows after target practice -- I need to make some longer distance shots for the learning curve. While I was in an Archery shop today a young Couple brought in his CrossBow --- the Cocking Device was Broke.. His shot at higher speeds than mine and it would take a Gorilla to use the Off Brand Crossbow

Several years ago, I took a 10 point crossbow to the bow shop to have new limbs installed. The owner had been dry firing it. When I retrieved the bow no one could cock it. We finally managed to cock it. When the bow was fired, the bolt went through the target, careened off several pieces of farm equipment and sailed out across a rice field. Took the bow back to the shop. Had the owner try to cock it. Nothing doing. He put it in a bow press and found it to be pulling in excess of 200 pounds. The technician had put a string on it that was almost 2 inches too short. Helluva fast bow if you could cock it.

I was fortunate enough to win one of these high speed cross bows at a QDMA Banquet about 3 years ago and it sends the bolt through my target and into the ground about 20 to 30 feet beyond. Every year when I'm sitting in my box blind I have wished I had my cross bow with me cause a doe comes from my rear in range to stick with an arrow, The Rage broad heads have the largest cutting capacity for the most efficient kill, maby this year I'll bring it for a backup if the situation presents it's self this year.

When The string gets worn ,, I will try to get a new string that is about an inch longer to slow the speed down and save my Bolts and Vanes

IF you buy the correct target for xbows it won't bury the bolt. I bought a high speed one and it works just peachy. no I wouldn't shoot past 40 yards or so but very confident up to then. havn't had patience to go out and do much with it but is fun enough just to target shoot. My boy has it more than I do.
