I know wax worms are good for brim but are they as good for shellcrakers as the redworms? Have never used anything other than crickets and redworms here in MS for panfish and believe I will have to order anything else as I have never seen wax worms, spikes etc. for sale around here.

I rarely use redworms for bream or shellcrackers. Since I discovered the maggot (spike), that's been my bait of choice. Wax worms and meal worms are also excellent. Between those two, I'd take the meal worms since they keep for so long.

I'll second the meal worms. I order 500 last year from Grubco and have kept them in the refrig and used them all winter. Have just run out. They are easier to bait the hook and stay on better. I have caught several bream on the same worm.
It's hard to beat a redworm for shellcrackers.... But I have caught a few on wax worms before.
I too have had luck using waxies for shellcracker , but what i found works best is a small bream hook , no weight and a small red wiggler - i thread it on and leave about an inch of the worm off the end of the hook. The "Wiggling Inch" drives those crackers nuts here and they can't resist the sucker.
I've always used nightcrawlwers that I pick in the back yard after it rains - if there's been no rain for a few days, I'll use the garden hose to water down a section of the yard around sunset.
I guess if I wanted to use spikes, I could leave a couple fish carcasses out for a few days - but I don't think my better half would appreciate the aroma.
If you fish with Meal worms check this place out. I have ordered from them the last few years. They ship fast and there product are great. Giant Meal worms are 10.00 per thousand.

try the Berkley power wigglers in the wax worm color. they work as good as live bait and last longer on the hook and in storage. put 2 of them on a 1/32 or 1/62 oz jig in your favorite color and you should do just fine, if not better than live bait. I gave up live bait years ago and will never go back.
I am a big fan - hence the name.
Try a 1/32 oz.black popeye jig with a waxworm on the end of it around the oxbow willows and cypress trees right now and I think you will see why!!!

Thanks for the heads up on where to order mealworms. I always fish for crappie, but occasionally just for Bream. It has always been with a wax worm on a Bob Clouser style minnow/jig with bead chain eyes. I'll try the mealworms at that price.
How/where did you store them? What bedding did you use? What did you feed them? Did you have to keep the soil damp like with redworms?:confused:
