Long line trolling preferences..?

I`ve had some success using this technique on my jon boat utilizing a slow troll with 2 lines at the the back and then 2 longer rods on the side. My questions really have to with lures and what you guys use. I often tie 2 1 inch curly tail jigs along with 2 1/32nd jig heads, mixing up the colors til I hit the right combo.

I`ve read where many use road runners to troll but what are some of your favorite lures/rigs?

Would I be just as well of using one 1/16 jig head as opposed to my way of 2 1/32 rigs?


Interested in what you guys use....I realize conditions, time of year, depth of water, etc come into play

I like 2 or 3 in. curly tails but typically run 3/32 or even 1/8 depending on the depth and speed and where the fish are in the water column. I run one jig and have run two but it really twists the line. I run 6 from the bow and two from the stern with just me in the boat and four from the stern with a partner. Typically run .8 to 1.2 depending on the previously mentioned. Tight lines!

The possibilities are endless! Whatever your imagination can come up with WILL work at one time or another. We drift & side pull with straight tailed plastics (i.e.: BG Baby Shads), paddle tailed plastics (Brewer Sliders), curly tails, Road Runners.....the list is endless. Play around with whatever perks your fancy and I'll guarantee that if you LOCATE fish and bait (on you sonar).....you will get bit. Half the fun of crappie fishing is in the experimentation. Nothing works all the time - and everything will work sometime. Have fun! :)

A 1/16 oz jig will run shallower than the double 1/32. It doesn't hurt to mix it up. As you mentioned, there are a lot of variables. I'd be glad to share my thoughts. PM me if needed and I'll give you my number.

I run singles, both 16 and 32nd. Curl tail or straight and length is chosen by the fish. I throw a lot of different things at them til they show a pattern, which sometimes they don’t. Remember there are days when nothing works well. Doubles just added to my headaches and hang ups lost twice as much gear and made retying a chore.

I use singles now, skeetbum pretty well said it all.
