You want to match the hatch or bait(color and size) the bass are feeding on at this time of year in your location. Check with locals on what lures others are having success with right now. A small outboard and hand held trolling motor will be a good investment for the tournament as well as for future outings. The first and foremost preparation is you and your son’s safety. I have fished many dozens of hours in a 12’ aluminum Jon boat powered by a 30-45 ft.lb. trolling motor. A very good PFD for each of you. Weight and weight distribution is critical in safe operation of your vessel. Be aware of your freeboard in determining your setup. Typically in these small craft it wise travel and fish in close proximity to the shoreline and resist crossing big or deep water. Wind, waves, and wakes can be hazardous. Being aware of these conditions as well as incoming weather can make all the difference in the world. Check all of the rules of the tournament (I.e. some have minimum boat size restrictions, etc.). Good luck on your first tournament and don’t worry about others laughing. Catching more fish than they do will quiet them right down.
