I used to have a boss whose mother raised minnows to sell to bait shops. They had ponds and would lay out a minnow net, throw feed on the net, and scoop up minnows.
I got plenty of room in the backyard. What about one of those big water tubs they sell at Tractor Supply? If you kept it in the shade, would a couple of pounds of fathead minnows raise enough to use for crappie fishing? Fatheads are what they sell in the fish trucks that come bye once a month.
I built a 55 gallon tank that I keep in my garage. I put a commercial bubbler and a koi pond filter on it. I built it for 2-3 pounds of shiners but ended up with closer to 4 pounds. I kept them in cool weather for 4 months and because of Covid, I kept them much longer than planned. I started losing some as weather got hot and I wasn’t using them. Dumped a pound or so in late May. I didn’t feed them since I hadn’t planned on keeping them that long. Unless you use a cooler or chiller, I wouldn’t try to keep very many in warm weather. I plan on using a small cooler with home ice and recirculate tank water thru it from the tank as weather gets warmer.

I agree a 55 gallon tank/aquarium is a temporary holding tank. I am thinking biiiggggeeer. Those TS tanks are 6' across and 2' tall. Probably 200-250 gallons, guessing. I have an area where they would be in the shade all day. Another thought is I now have an empty cattle barn. Concrete floor and I could cycle rain through the tanks, and have electricity for filters and air pumps. Hmmm....
