Drop Shot Rig

With the water up in the 80s the Gill have headed for deep water. We have been using a drop shot rig(slightly modified) with good success. I use a easy clip instead of tying the lure to the line.
We have a lot of small Perch in our lakes and they can ruin a lure in a short time. The trashed lures can be replace without retying the rig.
Components: # 8 aberdeen Hook, ultra medium chenille,kip tail or rubber hackle tail material. I went to the tail materials as feathers do not hold up as well.Attachment 380104Attachment 380105

That sounds like a really good idea. I would love to locate the big ones here after they spawn it's 25' to 35' of water and this is a huge lake, lol! The big ones here spawn in like 11' of water where the medium and smaller sizes spawn in shallows here.

I also like the flies your using.

Very similar to the perch rigs we use here in the fall when gills stack up in deep water. Nice lures/flies.

Has anyone used this for Crappie with any success?

We use this jig for crappie here in Iowa after the thermocline fades in the fall.

We tried the rigs out this afternoon and they worked well. We boated over 100 Gills along with 10 mid sized crappies.
A lot of 7 & 8 inch gills; the crappies went 10 inches. The best gill went 9 inches all were C&R.Attachment 380158Attachment 380159Attachment 380160
The rubber and kip tail lures held up nicely and showed little or no ware

Good job, I want to try and find the big ones here, but will have to do some reading before I try. I know they are here because I got into them one time a long time ago, but that morning we got 42 and the smallest was 3/4 pound and the largest was 1 3/4 pounds. That I want to do again, lol!

This is a versitile rig: you can fish deep water or use a lite weight and fish the shallows with a float. The rig can be slow trowled ,jigged or used casting.
