I hit some barely underwater rebar yesterday and gouged a hole thru gel coat right at waterline. It is NOT thru fiberglass. I will be filing Ins claim likely and will get repaired. I have had someone suggest fingernail polish to seal area. What about flex tape for a temporary fix? Have used for other things.
I'd use whichever one was the easiest to remove once repairs are started. Fingernail polish will eventually wear off on its own, but removing it would require nail polish remover, some of which contain acetone ... which is not recommended for gel coat or fiberglass in a concentrated form. I'm not sure about Flex Tape, but they do have "removers" for adhesives.
If the gash is not thru the fiberglass ... personally, I'd opt to leave it as is. Repairs are going to warrant cleaning the area anyway, so any "waterline scum" would likely be easier to remove than any sealing product.
Flex tape is good stuff but it does leave some residue which isn’t hard to remove, just need goo gone or bug and tar remover and some elbow grease. I would avoid anything that would need acetone or mineral spirits to remove. Just my 2 cents.

If it is not thru the fiberglass and is only surface, and you don't want it "Really Noticeable", buy a bottle of touch up paint in the closest match color you can find. Take a pic of the color and head to the store. Sand the small area only where you must for the paint to stick.
Dob, dob, dob at it until it is filled in, and get it fixed when you want to.
Keep the paint in a dark, cool place in the garage - you will probably find need for it again!
A fellow crappie.com friend helped me.. we applied some fiberglass bondo to just seal the area.. should be good to go till i can get permanent fix..

Bondo should take care of it, I would have just used some 100% silicone in it. That would seal it off, and be easy to remove during the actual repair. Mainly want to seal it off to prevent any potential for delamination.
