1989 Mariner 150 Voltage Regulator

I was leaving the lake the other day and had just taken a short trip to the ramp when my motor (0C156789) stopped when I put it in neutral. It would stay running if I used the high idle lever but died when put in gear. I did this about the or four times before I noticed thick yellowish white smoke coming from the cowl. I disconnected the battery, extinguished the "fire", and put the boat on the trailer without using the motor. On investigation I found the voltage regulator had burned. I disconnected everything at the ramp and went home. I have ordered another voltage regulator.

I've checked the stator with a multi-meter but I'm not a mechanic. Do these just "go bad" or should I be looking for something else that caused it?

I had the same thing happen. Don't know what the "normal" cause is. In my case, it did just go bad. Installed a new regulator and it worked fine. I'm sure there are different causes and different scenarios.

Man I hope that’s all it is. The part was 500 bucks.

Please don't go solely on my experience. As you noted, there may be something else that caused it. I got a replacement from the junkyard, so I wasn't going to lose much anyway. Think I paid $20?

By all means, I highly recommend you change the stator with a CDI model, and change the rectifier also.
Look on Amazon and Ebay, the stator can be found for less than $200, and the rectifier for less than $50.
The CDI units are far superior.
On a side note, on top of your motor, make sure the flywheel cover is intact and in good shape, and the hole plug in the center over the flywheel nut is installed and in good shape. If these are not on and intact, water can get down around the stator and cause all kinds of bad juju. This usually happens when the boat is on the trailer with the motor tilted up, the vent holes in the back of the cowl will allow water to go straight to where you don't want it when washing your boat or trailering in the rain.

AND - check for circuit protection. It is possible that it failed, or needs one now.
On a side note, I highly recommend battery disconnects to easily shut off all power for any reason you want to, any time you want to.
I went with these, installed on the negative side of each battery, of course.

Hmm, can't figure for the life of me why one would burn up on on you like that. I will look over your motor a bit onscreen, been trouble shooting an older 91 Evinrude 150 from top to bottom as of late. On my motor that would be called a power-pack and the coils would be on top of it separate of the pack itself. What is your model # on that 150 Mariner? I probably PM you to keep dander low..
