First Night Bite Flight LOZ 6/15/2020

I took Christopher out for his first night fishing expedition. We trolled crankbaits in a couple spots on the Gravois and got 5 keepers with several dinks and a walleye. After dark we made a run to the four mile marker and got ten more off a bluff point. Christopher was actually outfishing me for a while until he took a break trying to catch minnows around the light. I think he was more proud of catching a gar fingerling by hand than any crappie by rod n' reel. I have found when it comes to kids if they are having fun, even though if it's not what you came to do, then just roll with it. On a side note Crappiejoe12 and I went out Sunday and got 16 trolling crankbaits and 15 drifting minnows off a bluff after dark. On a safety note one thing that I never even thought of doing until I started taking my kids fishing is chocking a tire when loading/unloading the boat in case your vehicle pops out of gear..... or maybe not having them in the vehicle at all if the ramp is really steep.....just a thought.Attachment 378353Attachment 378354

Only person in the vehicle when loading/unloading the boat is in the drivers seat and in charge of backing the trailer and pulling it out. I never let a child sit in the truck during this process.

Great Job Dad! Would you share any other night trolling details , ie speed , depth , bandit crank or, ? Last weekend we attempted to troll Lake Oz at night for the first time and couldn’t get a bite. Any info you could share much appreciated. It’s great that you have fishing buddy son.

Good point this is something that I really never paid attention to until I noticed my E-brake was getting a little loose. I started chocking a tire and the wheel chock was tight when I got done so I knew the truck was moving a just a little bit. Now I just think it's best not to have anyone in the truck at all unless they are pulling the trailer out. I fish a lot by myself so never paid that much attention. I have never seen anyone chock a tire at the ramp but I do every time now just in case.

At night I just vertical fish minnows and slow drift using the trolling motor to stay in a general spot. Once minnows get around the light the crappie will move in if they are biting. Many times I have started near a dock and drifted 20 to 30 yards away and the fish followed. Just fish a good looking spot that has deep water and good structure. Any dock that has deep brush is usually good also and if the wind picks up you can throw out an anchor. We trolled crankbaits before dark at about 1.5 mph. I was using a chrome Hot n' Tot, sexy shad Strike King 3XD, and sparkle ghost 300. I think Crappie Joe got all his fish on a crappie color 300.
