Took my son to Prineville res yesterday and we got 57 crappie and one bass. Just idled the boat along about 15yds off rocky shoreline till I found fish on the depth finder. Then threw out two anchors and fished till the bite fell off. Did get one at 8" but most were around 10", big for here. Biggest was 13", only the one. Took us a couple hrs to clean them when we got home!

I just started crappie fishing last year so don't know how well they are spread out here. The hot spot seem's to be Brownlee Res on the Snake River. Suppose to be pretty much unlimited supply there. Next best I know of is Prineville Res near Prineville, Ore. Averaged about 30 a day last year but fairly small at 8", sure ate good though! This year their running about 10" and my big one was 13". Ochoco Res closer to Prineville has them too. I went there for the first time with a cousin this year and we only got 18 but they were all right at 10". Wait, got 9 and 9 bass. Relatively few crappie fishermen here, trout and salmon is what everyone seem's to worship! Fine with me too! No size limit or bag limit on crappie but the few guy's I know that look for them don't keep much under about 8". The though here is they are over crowded and need to be thinned so some guy's take a lot home, I am one of those guy's. Since being introduced to them fall before last I have become an idiot to catch them, great eating and really fun on ultra light gear! Going to try going deeper for them next trip out, next week. Got some 1/64th jig heads and gonna do a count down to get down and slow retrieve. Last year all my fish came around submerged brush. This year water is really low and had to find them somewhere else, found them on the rocks! Now to get going deeper to try for bigger fish!
Nice report Don. Good luck with your crappie adventures. I was in Spokane MANY years ago in the USAF and trout was king!

I hear tell that brownlee is flat loaded with them , don't know about the other spot

Loved your post. My buddy moved to Oregon and all we fished for were Salmon and Tuna. We always did quite well on my yearly visits but never tried freshwater. He lived on the coast at Lincoln City so saltwater made sense but he's the guy that got me Crappie fishing in Ga.
We were in Georgia at the time and the fishing you described matched exactly what we had in the 70s. Limit was 50 and we took a 100 a couple of times, most barely 8" . The lake was overpopulated with them. That's too many fish to clean for me.
If he'd like to go have him get a hold of me. My boat works pretty well for two adults! My son lived in Newport for awhile and said he caught them in a small pond there. I fish mostly Prineville Res but tried Ochaco Res first time this year and got only nine but also nine bass Ochaco fish averaged about 10".Quote:
