Wondering what is the preferred rod/real setup for pulling cranks. This is the first time I've ever pulled crank baits. I've swapped my Millennium Spyderloks to the rear of the boat, 6 rods, pulling at approximately 1.5mph. I've been pulling with my 14' Ozark rigging rods. They certainly work but I don't really want to deal with 14' rods if I don't have too. I noticed Mike Baker (youtube) pulls with 7' medium action bass cranking rods.
I just told my wife that I was going to give two of my long rods away. Why give the rods away? Because I want shorter rods to give better spacing with the two longer rods that I will be keeping. Baker gave me the visual of what I needed to do, and the MS forum thread on cranking did the rest. Everyone seems to want the longest rod they can get, and I understand that. But practically speaking two 10 footers coupled with two seven footers is about all I can handle, or want to handle. The ten footers may be the next to go!!!
I pull with a 14 and a 10 straight out each side at the back and then two 8 ft. Straight out the back.....this gives me good separation and let's me cover more water. Been pulling like this for 15 years now. All rods are BnM PST's Works fine for me.
6' & 9' ugly sticks along with a jenko 12' all with bass pro tourney bait casters is what works for me , I think the key to cranking is line separation
I run a 14' Southern Crappie Rods SCR143T and a modified SCR 10' off each side and 4 Berkley Cherrywood 7' off the transom.
