Rigging rods modified

I had posted these pictures on the Missouri forum but I thought some of you spider riggers would appreciate this. I had bought some new rods a couple of years ago and the handles were starting to show some wear and tear. My solution was to add some heat shrink wrap to them and add some color at the same time. The heat shrink is available from Mud Hole in different sizes and colors. I don’t know if any member sponsors have this available but if so let us know.

Do you remember or did you notice how much length shrinkage you got when you put these on? I have some of the shrink on order. I have Capps & Coleman
B &Ms. They have a bell on the end of the grip. I want to keep the bell and can't figure if I need to stop the shrink at the bell or cover it and try to keep the
shape by using less heat on that area.

I originally bought 25mm tubing. I will be able to use it on other rods but would not fit over the flair on the ends of the rods. I reordered 35mm which worked ok but I could have gotten by with 30mm. There wasn’t much shrink in the length but it really didn’t have to be that precise. I ended up cutting some a little too long but if you start at one end you can trim it with a little pair of scissors. They ended up pretty snug on the ends but I have only used them twice. How long they hold up remains to be seen. It looks like the same material they use on cheap little league baseball bats so I think it will hold up to summer heat. In regards to your original question the shrink on the length was minimal. The flair at the end was not an issue. It shrunk to fit either on the level prob the flair.

Thank you for the advise.

And if you use different length rods, the use of different colors can help you identify each length of rod. We use to use various colors of electrical tape.

I did this to some old rods that had cork wrap. I is really nice and is holding up very well. Length shrink was little to none.
