Has anyone been on the upper sections of the cape fear lately specifically around the hwy 42 access in Corinth?
I’m curious about hazards and if a small bay boat / bass boat can navigate up towards the deep river / haw river and how far up you can go.
I grew up fishing the deep river near carbonton before they removed the dam so I understand tree falls and such. I really would love to find somewhere to fish a river like we used to.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
Bass boats are on that section all the time, it's pretty deep above buckhorn dam, like 15+ deep. Primary hazards are floating logs and there are plenty of them.
I live about 15 minutes from the Avent's Ferry boat ramp... and as far as I know the Cape Fear, Deep and Haw Rivers are passable and open all the way to the dams (Old Lockville Power Plant (Deep River) and Jordan Dam(s) (Haw River)), where your boating journey ends on both rivers and also at the Buckhorn Dam on the Cape Fear a two miles east of the bridge. I have noticed there have been 15 or 20 boat trailers parked out there the last few times I've been by there and it doesn't appear that the current is too much stronger than normal since Jordan Lake is somewhat back to normal pool and they are not dumping as much water as they were a month or so ago. The normal river cautions do apply, however, as the Cape Fear River is a constantly changing entity and a tree or log, as you know, can break free at any time on any day... and may be floating in plain sight or may be dangerously submerged just inches below water level.

My dad fished this section many many years ago but I know things change so I appreciate the information.
Also should say anytime you go under any type of bridge, go slow until you know the river. A lot of the bridge structure is just below the water, even out in the open where you'd think it would be clear. If you go flying under a bridge you might get a nasty surprise.Quote:
