This is great info! Thanks!
I just apply the weights I use & the speed I troll (Push) & the amount of line out at about a 45deg angle to determine depth of my jig.
I don't Longline Troll or Pull jigs/cranks ... I Push them, so ....
In my case it's 1oz trolling weights @ 1mph + 20ft of line out to get jig down to approx. 10-12ft deep. That's based on the right triangle theory that says if your line is at a 45deg angle you can figure how deep the jig is by multiplying the length of line out (under the surface) by 0.6 (so 20ft of line out on a 45deg angle would equal 12ft deep -- 20x0.6=12 ) Or you can use the equation of 5=3 (every 5ft of line out at a 45deg angle equals 3ft of depth)
In my neck of the woods your target depth range for jigs & cranks is normally between 12-18ft deep.
We used an old RR track under water at 10'. Went back and forth till our jigs were just bumping the bottom. Recorded weights and speed. Amount of line out also impacts, so we threw out as far as possible and away we went.
