I have used a Carolina Rig rigged vertically for many years to spider rig for crappie and I do vary the weight between 1/2 and 3/4 depending on how fast I am moving or how strong the wind is blowing.
In fact I just got through rigging eight rods and making about twenty leaders today. Whether you choose minnows or jigs... a Carolina Rig fished vertically is my recommendation for spider rigging.
I use 1/4 jig heads, 3/8 oz, 3/4 oz and 1 1/2 for power trolling

My buddy used to use 1/2oz weights above his leader/jig/minner rigging, then went to 3/4oz weights to keep his lines vertical when Spider Rigging ... regardless of windy conditions or not, or what weight jighead he was using.Quote:

I must be doing it all wrong, 3/8 oz. with 2 -1/16 oz. jigs is all i use , but i use an xi5 to spider rig with.
Don't think there is really a right and wrong way. Different methods work for different people. I always want to use the least amount of weight possible. The faster I am moving, the more weight I want to keep lines vertical. The rougher the water is the more weight I want to help keep the bait from bouncing too much. This is where the action of the rod comes into play as well.
