I currently have a bait caster on my 13 ft. Phantom Todd Huckabee rod but I keep getting the line wrapped around the handle as I pull back excess line to swing out again. I think I'm going to go back with a small to mid sized spinning reel and put the handle on whichever side it doesn't give me problems. I also like the ease at which I can strip more line out against the drag with a spinnng reel. What is your favorite reel to use?
One of my old bait casters as I never cast but like lots of line as I cut it off and retie often . Many folks fail to think about how line gets worn causing line failures .You can use left or right hand reels as not casting . Like the weight to help balance the longer poles . Most bait casters even cheaper ones hold lots of line and have great drags . They also won't cause line twist like spinning reels when it slips .
I use spinning reels on all of my jig rods. I also like the drag features on most spinning reels and occasional I will cast some, especially when I am using a ten foot rod. Some eleven or twelve foot rods can get pretty heavy so usually I like a lighter reel. The last couple of years I have added two of the Pflueger President models and really enjoy using them.
If I am fishing down to 12' or so I like a fly rod style reel. If fishing deeper than that I like a Academy's Tiny reel (spinning reel). The reason I don't like the fly reels for deeper water is simply due to the slow gear ratio for reeling in. What I do like about both reels is when combined with my 10' rear seat rods is they are so light. I can fish all day with zero fatigue.

Why not use the "other hand" to pull line back (towards the side of the reel opposite of the handles) ?? Or it that's "cumbersome" to you, then turn the reel to where the handles are pointing down before swinging the line out again.Quote:

I like the fly style reels when spider rigging and used them for a couple of years. Lightweight and easy to strip line off with the drag set light in shallow water and you can cup the reel in your hand to lock the line for a solid hookset. However, if you decide to pull jigs and/or cranks, you just cant cast them and it takes forever to strip line and retrieve it. So I use spinning reels on all my rods now except for my power troller rods and I run baitcasters on them. I just push with these and run 4 ounces of weight on them to cover plenty of ground and keep that line straight
Zebco t11. Cheap, simple, light and can be cast if needed.
