Asian Carp Aid

Slabseeker1 mentioned our group discussion at the KY ShinDig about what is being done to eliminate the destructive Asian Carp in KY and Barkley Lakes. A group has been formed as a 501c3 to plan a festival to educate the public about the carp, what is being done about them, how they can be developed as a food product, and to raise funds to help keep the subsidies going for commercial fishermen as well as improving fishing and tourism. The following video is quite long but Matt Quinn of HiTek Outdoors is explaining his plans for the festival and beyond.

Asian Carp Aid - For those whom could not attend, this is...

There are some good ideas, but like the presentation said, "Ideas are easy, execution is hard." Their committee approach should be effective in planning it.

It seemed to me that there was a lot of emphasis on bass tournaments, bass tournament pros speaking/seminars, etc. I've ran a few bass tournaments myself, and they are a lot of work and are costly that generate very little money for the intended beneficiary/charity without a lot of sponsors, as opposed to something like a golf scramble. I think they need to focus more on the non-fishing elements because there are WAY more people who don't fish than there are who do. The concerts, beer festivals, golf outings, poker runs, asian carp cooking contest, etc. seemed like the better ideas that they came up with.

artcarney, thanks for the link to the presentation. I agree, something like Asian Carp Fish cooking contests/fish fries would get more of the general public involved. Most of us over 40 love to eat fish and you could charge at least $6-$8 for an all you can eat meal and set up a stand for donations to help eradicate the carp. I live in Central KY, but I feel for the people in Western KY. If things(fishing) don't improve in the next few years(regardless of any 'spin' about spawns, etc), things will get bad for the businesses at KY and Barkley Lakes. I visit there and these people need help stop the negative stuff about the Asian Carp and assure everything is getting better. If not, I will continue to see businesses shut down again on my next trip out there.

Don’t knock it until you try it. No exaggeration, it’s as good or better than brim and catfish. I think better to be honest. The IGA in Paris Tn sells fillets.

I really want to see Asian Carp for sale in the U.S. as surimi/imitation crab/Japanese fish paste. All the Asian Carp going overseas is ground up into fish paste/surimi, and sold as a cheap protein source (surimi in Japan is like the equivalent of hotdogs in the U.S.). I feel like it would do well here in the U.S. if packaged well and marketed to people as a quick and easy snack full of protein and Omega-3.

The Seafood Snackers packs are sold at Walmart for $1 a pack. I usually have a pack in my lunch every day. Tastes great! Pollock is the primary fish in the Seafood Snackers, simply replace the pollock with Asian Carp and I think it would be a real hit! It would also be easy to hand out at events raising awareness about Asian Carp, like Asian Carp Fest coming up in June!

artcarney, I agree, I love this stuff. I get mine at Kroger's and it is basically fish(Pollack) with crab meat seasoning, but it's good stuff. So, we need someone to start processing the Carp in a way to make this 'Imitation' Crab meat. I'm sure it would sell well.
