Question on fish finder.

I see that what ever way I'm going doesn't mean squat to what I see on the fish finder. Going forward the data moves from right to left. In reverse it does the same thing! Is that normal? Can't figure out where they are under the boat either. Are they all going right out the back in single file. Can't be as I got on a nice school yesterday and didn't matter what side of the boat I was out on. Wish I could tell about how wide the school really is. Another thing, I ease around looking for pocket's of fish and I just don't know where they go after seeing them. Look's like they come out the back of the boat and I cast out that way but seldom get a strike. But am learning to find pocket's of them finely. Haven't a clue how to find structure though!

It would help to know which fish finder you have

Hummingbird 550.

It's all relative to the movement of the boat and of the fish with 2D sonar.

If the boat is stationary, and the fish are not moving quickly, they will showup as a straight horizontal bar suspended off the bottom. If the boat is moving, or the fish are moving, then you will get the arch or football shaped return.

It's also worth noting that 2D sonar has a pretty narrow cone, which is proportional to water depth.

The right side of your graph is the "live feed". Anything scrolling to the left is history. If the boat is moving, that is where you've been, if not, it is only showing what was under the boat within the last minute or so.

As for finding structure, many run over it with the boat and toss a marker buoy. If you have GPS, you can drop a waypoint and use that to come back to it.
