Crappie disease?

I was out Friday teaching some old dogs a few tricks on the lake.
I noticed several of the crappie had their tails messed up like they'd been fanning a nest.
Is this unusual for September?

I agree with you. Been seeing some of the same thing in areas where gar are thick. Also some pretty good slices in body from them. Think it’s just that time of year where shad are getting bunched up and fish are getting bunched up feeding and gar just snap at anything that could be food.

Very well could be what's happened to that crappie. Haven't noticed it lately. But as a kid, we could go on the wall ledge down below the Dam in Fort Mill and we could sometimes watch the gar swimming with fish in their mouths around the power house. Lots of people bow fished off the wall there and left gar in the rocks to decay. Seen lots of big one there!

It could be a disease, in extreme warm water conditions, fish can develop a type of fungus growing on fins that will cause them to deteriorate. Usually the cuts on sides of fish are caused by diving birds like loons and cormorants.

Seen where big bluecats grab a fish or two too. Not many because I believe when they catch them they eat them. I've also seen fungus on fish so that's possible too. Dunno……
