Two day crappie report. 7/1,2/2019
Phil and I launched from two different places yesterday and today. We went out of Skull Island yesterday and fished offshore the entire time. First stop, we caught more channel catfish and bass than crappie. Grin. Slimers and trashy green fish. But we ended up with 8 total keeper crappie for our 3 hours of fishing.
Then today, we launched out of Wolftever and fished in the main river most of the 2.5 hours of fishing and we had a great morning. I knew from looking at the solunar tables that today might be the best fishing day in July. The moon set and the sun rose within 13 minutes of each other so the early bite should have been and was terrific. We had 25 keepers in about an hour and a half with maybe 5 short crappie. No bass or catfish today, but Phil hooked a really nice bass that would have gone home with me except he spit the lure out on the first jump. We kept 13 that were 11” and bigger and released all 10” fish.
The surface water is heating up rapidly as it was 84.6 before the sun was up and 86.8 when we put the boat on trailer at 9 AM. There was a 13,000 current flow and although it doesn’t show it on the TVA web site, there was a significant increase in current at 7 AM but that isn’t reflected in the numbers that TVA is putting out.
Fishing may get tough for crappie if the temp keeps going up. We used Bobby Garland lures today in Slab Slayers and Minnow Mind,Rs. I had best luck with Blue Ice SS. Phil caught fish on Stink Bug, Lights Out, and Lightning Bug MM that he dabbed in Chartreuse Spike-it.
I’m probably going to fish for two hours in the morning and then rest until next Tuesday. I have a new friend from Kentucky coming down for some DK teaching. I could probably show him everything I know in 30 minutes or less. Lolol. If I can teach him to detect a crappie bite, then he will be home free.
