Yamaha Lower Unit Problem

Was unloading Saturday morning, and it seemed to pop out of gear and grind. Sounded awful. Put it in neutral still had a rattle that wasn’t normal. Forward was normal. Ended up getting it in reverse and went fishing.

Getting ready to load up. It’ll reverse at idle but any thing more it just grinds.

Got home and took the foot off and drained the oil. Some water and some shavings on the magnetic plug, not bad but there was some. Shift rod spines look fine. Reinstalled it. I can manually put it in reverse and spin it prop clockwise and it turns the motor, put it in forward and spin counter clockwise and it spins the motor. Put it in neutral, spin either way and it clicks.

Took it to the closest ramp and crank it, it just grinds in reverse. It almost acts like it’s not being engaged far enough.

Not sure if my linkage is out of adjustment or what.

Any suggestions?

I adjusted the shift cable at the motor and control. It goes in gear good in a barrel. I was about to take it to the water and another thunderstorm came up. Hope to try it tomorrow afternoon. I’m hoping the cables are just worn out. I imagine it’s the original ones from 2001.

Best way to do it is disconnect cable at motor, put shift leaver in neutral by shifting back and forth a couple of times then put in neutral position. Then move shift leaver on motor back and forth until your sure she is in neutral. Then take cable end and place it at hole in motor lever. Adjust cable until it just slides right into hole. Cables over time will stretch or move in their housings.

That’s pretty much what I did. Only I didn’t have enough adjustment at the motor so I adjusted at the control too. Seems to be working now in a barrel at least. I’ll probably put it in the water tomorrow to be sure.

Hope I don’t have to get the foot redone.

You have issues inside the lower unit if you are looking for that much adjustment to bring it back into service. The linkage shouldn't require adjustment once it's set correctly. At some point, if you find enough adjustment to obtain reverse, you will lose forward.

Sounds like maybe the clutch dog in the lower unit needs attention, but if it's a 2001 like you said I wouldn't think that'd be the issue though as those things last a pretty long time.

Just dropped it off at the shop. He said that’s what he thought it was. Going to run around $700 to get it fixed.
