Good early crappie trip 5/24/19
Dr Phil and I had an early crappie trip in order to beat the heat and the bass tournament guys. Also, Phil had early work so we couldn’t stay long. We had the boat back on the trailer by 9 am.
What we did today surely beat what I did yesterday, when all I could catch were small 10” crappie and a bunch of short fish. We landed 10 keeper size, but didn’t keep all of them and Phil lost three nice keepers at the top of the water at the boat while I was reaching for the net. He is going to learn that you don’t hold them on top while your partner is getting the net. They shake off too easily when their heads are out of the water.
I caught 5 big crappie on my first 5 casts with the biggest at 13 7/8” long. Phil landed a 14” tarp Black crappie there as well. It was a good start to the morning. We hit some other spots that we haven’t fished in quite a while. One area was void of fish or baitfish. At least we couldn’t find them there.
Flow-rate when we started was 13,000 cfs increasing to 19,000 cfs by the time we stopped at 9 am. Water temp increased two degrees from yesterday and was reading 79.8 surface. Next week’s heat wave will push temps in high 80’s or low 90’s and I don’t like to see that happening with a crappie tournament coming up in a couple of weeks.
Bobby Garland Slab Slayers in a couple of colors worked today. 2” on 3/32 and 1/16 oz jig heads. Lots of fun today.
