Sunday fishin report: Maiden voyage of the "I suck at shallow water crappie fishin'"
I've always sucked at shallow water crappie fishing. I'm fair when they go deep. 1 other important thing to note is that I hate trolling. I'm a Chickamauga guy, focusing on crappies in the Hiwassee arm more than anything.
Went to check out the turkey situation for next Saturday and was back home by 10:30am. Decided to take the rig out and start trying make friends with my new electronics. During the heavy rains over the last year (it seems like) I have read a ton of research on spring crappie (plus gleaned a lot of info from this site).
I had a spot in mind from all of this research, and when I got to this spot it looked like a funeral procession of at least 20 boats, following each other nose-to-tail...kinda looked like the Martinsville speedway LOL. I decided NOT to get in line (as if I was equipped to troll with these guys anyway); I ran up the middle until I hit 3ft of water and let the wind push me all the way back down to 7ft of water, drifting two bobbers with BG shad about 3-4 ft down. Color definitely made a difference...anything with chartreuse in it got whacked. Anything w/o didn't get touched.
Water was stained, 59-60*...BGs were on 1/16oz heads, water was still pretty severely stained. That 4-5ft range seemed best. Make no mistake, those guys trolling made me look like the horrible shallow water guy that I am, but I did manage a few for the beer-batter. Kept the 10's-12.5's and released everything else. Had double the shorts that I did keepers. Did have 1 at 15" that looked like a football and several 13-14" that were obviously LOADED. I let all these fat girls go back swimmin'. Was a peaceful, relaxing afternoon watching those bobbers wobble in the wind.
:cheers2
