Waterfall Fish and an ID Question

The waters are falling fast up here in E Tn. Last week the bass eat me up in this creek, but the water level was over the waterfall in the background of the first pic.

First fish of the evening a 1.5lb Smallie, add another quarter pound of mud on me, the fish, and my rod. When the water falls fast the newly exposed bank is super muddy. One small Gill was caught.

The next several fish were of 1 of 2 species, and I forgot again to look at the tooth patch of these temperate Bass. I have trouble identifying these when they are small, so I may be wrong here but I think most were White Bass, about this size.

However, I caught some of these long skinny ones, all small also.

These are the ones I have trouble with. They look like Rockfish, or Stripers, but could be the Hybrid Cherokee Bass that is named for this lake. Help me out here, and one of these days I am going to remember to look at and photograph the tooth patches so I will have a reference photo for identification. All fish released, and GO VOLS. Sweet 16 bound.

You called em right, the top fish is a White Bass, the bottom is a Stripe.

The locals here call the White Bass a Stripe, but I know they are talking about the Whites. I prefer to call the ones that get up to 50+ pounds a Rockfish instead of a Striped Bass.

Here is a little guide. Seems like some in TN call all of them stripes. We also have a yellow bass that is similar but has much more pronounced stripes (i.e. thicker and of course golden in color). White perch (not in this area) can look similar to white bass but have no stripes. The wiper is also called hybrid and Cherokee bass and will have a broken stripe. The tooth patch thing isn't always exactly correct. A large striped bass is often called rockfish.

Your creek catches alway inspire me. Not far from my house is a great creek bed I love to hammer this time of year. Your post sent me over there looking for crappie....guess I’ll make a post soon!

I caught the third fish of the True (Temperature) Bass Trifecta later this week, a nice Cherokee or Hybrid Bass and posted some pics over on the Panfish Board. TWRA website has a similar chart I have saved in my photo album to have as a reference when I am on the water.
