For anyone who wants to save some money on zonker strips buy some of the Hairline hair piece bags! and cut your own zonker strips. I cut some to fill in colors and 3 from some new hide pieces I got. I have rabbit, squirrel, chinchilla, arctic fox, mink, sable, nutria, .... well a lot!! I sure ain't gonna run out!!!
Any more detail about correct way to do this? I’m sure it’s not as easy as grab scissors and cut is it?

He has done this a lot, me I just buy what I want and can get what ever colors I want. For me that is just too much of a pain when I can just buy some. Now if your into that kind of thing then go for it, but I don't even pour my own heads as when I started tying that is what I liked so much and pouring lead and some of the other hobby type things I just wanted to keep me in my wheelhouse of what I enjoy. I am just too old to want or need another new thing to take even more time that I already use. However again, this is just me!Quote:

Skip is right it is extra work but once you get a cutter made up and it's easy to do you can zip right through the pieces and have plenty of good zonkers to use. I usually get the bags on sale when I'm near a Cabela's and I have some money left over on a gift card I'll pick up another bag. The picture doesn't look like I've even gone and used any of what's in the bags but I have. You want to drive a Cabela's store clerk crazy! Open the bag up and take the pieces out and see how big they are!! LOL The flip every time!!
Dave I'll get some pics up tonight that will show you easily how to do it and make a cutter, and I only made the cutter as I got tired of cutting them one at a time with a box knife.
I found this interesting for anyone wanting to cut their own strips, Go to youtube and cut and paste: "whitetail fly tieing adjusting the zonker jig cutter".
You guys should know Fatman has been doing this for a pretty long time now so he has some practice with all this stuff, lol!

Just saw that today!! I don't like their cutter though - cheaper to make your own! But the box frame I like! Wish I had the tools and the wood shop to make one!
I learned how by bracing it on the table and then cutting a strip = even if it's not what you want it's still good! If it's different from what you want turn the hide then recut Attachment 337253Attachment 337254
