Tryin’ to find the Specks, normal saltwater guy here.

Normal saltwater flats fisherman here. Fish for Specks from time to time but have a lot more this year due to water quality in the Indian River Lagoon. Lookin’ to bring my limit or near the limit of Specks home to eat lol!! Fish St. John’s River by Lake Harney launch out of C.S. Lee Park off of 46 but have came up short past few times there. A guy told me yesterday the post spawn has them on lock jaw. New moon and full moon comin’ up he said target them when that comes up. Any advice on where to fish at for them and best times to go? Single pole jig mainly, horizontal castin’ and retrieve. Will vertical jig if by pilings and deeper water. Thanks!! Sheepshead

Spider rigging is the most successful way to fish for Specks especially after the spawn. There is plenty of information on this site. Take a look at 'send pics of your boat' for some ideas.

yeah I don’t have a boat I’m in a kayak it does look like a lot coverin’ which is great and I’ve seen folks do it on their shows and videos.

In that case I would continue to jig the pads and laydowns and cast just outside of cover. Plus you can troll with a pole out each side of your yak...

If your in a kayak look for places that boats can't get. Openings deep in behind a big Matt of hydrilla or pads. Back in flooded wooded areas etc.

Never fished for a kayak, good luck getting started. And welcome from Debary.

Near the grass was doing good for me last week when I was down. Keep trying you will find them. Minnow under a bobber in the weeds could work for you as well. From my experience if you are single pole jigging a good starting point is about 8 ft down. Or 1 to 2 feet of the bottom if you are in shallower water. Crappie feed up so if you fish under them that's no good. Good luck

Yeah I was doin’ that the other day trolling with a rod on either side. Looks like I need to add some good weight to drop them down more.

Thanks and I will cast more shad baits instead of curly tails. Love usin’ live minnows just tired of wastin’ money on live bait lol!! Nothin’ to bring home.

Find pads on the main river that stick out further then the rest is a basic technique that I use out there because pads favor certain depths and pads that stick out further can sometimes sign that you’ve got a shallower bottom in that location,and can confidently say it was a productive method (FOR ME)..I never stuck around a spot long if unproductive,3-5 cast and I’m on to the next...I also speck fish like a bass fisherman sooo. GOOD LUCK,if you ever get up towards Monroe/north river I’ll show you around.
