2012 Mercury 75 hp 4-stroke

Not wanting to start a debate at all, just looking for some general input on this era motor.

I'm am about to pull the trigger on a major (to me) boat upgrade. 2012 Lowe 175 Stinger w a 75 hp 4-stroke. I've been trying to find solid info on the reliability or major known issues for these models of 4-stroke motors and I'm coming up short.

Just wanted to throw this out and ask if the pre 2015 Merc 4-strokes have any major drawbacks? Anything in particular I should inspect specifically on this motor? The specific motor on the boat I'm considering has less than 50 hrs on it, boat is immaculate. Service records look good too.

You may already know this. The four stroke 75 is the same engine as the 90 and 115. They are all a 2.1 liter 4 cyl. And, they are US made. I have a 90 and like it way better than the two strokes I've had or used

I have a 2008 115, merc 4 stroke. Only trouble I have had was the tilt/trim pump went out.

Not a 75 but I have a 2011 60 hp and love it! No speed demon but very reliable so far!

Thanks for the reply. I'm feeling better abut the 2012 4-stroke.

I even run ethanol fuel in mine... but I do add sta-bil marine every time I fuel up

My 2010 115hp was a great motor and i wouldn’t hesitate to buy again. If it still has the foam air filter element, ditch it for the newer style Merc metal mesh air filter. The foam was known to completely dissolve into a gooey substance in the presence of oil and get sucked into the air intake. Mercury realized this and redesigned the filter element but never issued a recall. Ours was easy to work on for routine maintenance-oil change and filters.
