Why is the Triple Shot Lowrance so much bigger than the HB Helix SI transducer? Also, would the smaller size of the HB eliminate a blind spot on he starboard side (my transducer is mounted on the port side +/- 12" from the motor) if the motor is not elevated? It seems like a no brainer, but you have to believe Lowrance has their reasons. Thoughts?
I have installed both, the Lowrance on a friends boat. I was shocked at the size of the transducer. I think it produces a weaker signal and needs a larger "antenna" to pick up that signal. I am sure I would destroy it with a stump if it were on my boat.
The signal works by "line of sight" so if the signal is being shot to the left and the foot of the motor is blocking it, you will have a blind spot. This is where a jack plate helps. I dont have one so even with the shorter transducer of the Humminbird I still have to trim up a bit to shoot the left side on Side Image.
It is true shorter xducers may be easier to mount without SI blockage ...
The downside of shorter xducers is imaging piezo physics = shorter piezoes create less detailed imaging than longer imaging piezoes ...
The longer the piezo - the thinner the SI beam = more detail ...

Today was the first time I ever actually talked with Brian at BBG Marine. What a nice guy! He advised me about my boat, SI, and transducers. As per that conversation, I know I can expect blind spots, particularly with the Lowrance, but mainly due to the lack of tilt and trim. He also recommended SI in at least a 7" finder. Couple all that with trying to figure out piezos ( and pesos for a new finder) ;-) and I am about to nuts. Not really; it's all part of the fun of crappie fishing in a really blessed time of life!
A point to consider during your investigation ... :
HB has the capability of mounting an imaging xducer on each side of the boat with the 9 M SILR Y cable ...

This would allow left SI to come from the port mounted imaging xducer and right SI/2D/Temp to come from the starboard mounted imaging xducer ...
Of course this means the purchase of an additional imaging xducer ...
But it eliminates SI blockage from the lower unit completely ...

Does the unit do some form of splice then that has the same separation between right and left sides as seen with a single SI transducer?
SI xducers (all brands) have separate piezoes for left SI and right SI ... (and a separate DI piezo in certain models)

That's what the 9 M SILR Y cable does that Rickie mentioned in his first post. When you connect that cable to 2 SI transducers it will electrically make them appear to the unit to be a single transducer.Quote:

For blockage it also depends on the angle of the transom, my transom has a pretty good angle on it. I get a little interference when trimmed all the way down but a blip on the trim button clears it right up.
