Anyone ever add weight to the line to get a crankbait to run deeper?
Will it work?
Thanks

Yes I’ve done it. Did I catch fish? No bc only tried 1x.
I’ve never pulled crank baits, but I don’t see any reason it won’t work. To ensure the lead doesn’t interfere with the crank action, I would use a worm style weight above a swivel with a 3 foot leader to crank bait.
Brett some will push cranks off the front of the boat using 4 oz or more to get the crank to the depth they want to fish. I have added small amount's of spit shots to get the 100's to run a little deeper and it will work but the right cranks for the depth the fish are holding works better for me. You can find some good named baits on sale at times and that's when to load up. Send William, ( Fisher-o-Men ) a PM and ask him if he has any for sale. He had a truck load a few years ago.
I do it all the time, Pushing and pulling. Cuts way back on amount of line out for a certain depth. It also makes turning a lot easier. I use 3oz weights and use the 2/3rd factor- 20 ft out equals 14'deep, 30' equals 20' deep. This is close. Running at 1.5mph.
I push them and pull them. 2oz weight pushing, 1-2-3 oz weights pulling off side with a 2 ft leader. I also started using OffShore Tadpoles and like them but they are expensive. If I’m pulling one trick I use when pulling at distance, say 75 ft and need to gain a couple of feet. I fish a duo lock snap from main line to crank, I will place a 1/4 to 1/2 oz worm weight on main line just above snap. It will not affect the action of the crank and I don’t like using leaders if I don’t have to.
When l lived on Douglas lake Tennessee pushing lipless cranks with 5 ounce weight on a leader or pushing 2oz to 4 oz cranks or jigs is common summertime trolling practice and pulling lead core lines and some pull traditional deep diving Bandits and other crankbaits to catch mostly the white crappie but this lake has a generous black crappie population also.
Many different techniques for trolling crankbaits.
