Google maps question
So we are going to be going across country driving, and I was wondering if the time is realistic on distance from city to city? I realize that accidents and road work will be a factor.
For example, Oxford Iowa to Ogallala Nebraska, 8hr? 559 mi.We will be on I 80 till Nevada.
Maby a pro driver can chime in, will be going in July.

I have found the times to be realistic IF I'm driving the speed limits which I rarely do when on Interstate highways. I usually lock the cruise control @ 6MPH over.

If you didn’t have to stop for gas or bathroom breaks maybe but I’d figure another 1.5 on to that.

Here is a nice tool to use with Google maps to plan a route.

You can enter stops and their duration. I couldn't figure out how to adjust driving speeds or delays do to road conditions but I guess that would be impossible anyway since you really don't know what they will be in advance.

"Distance" is likely pretty accurate, but "Drive Time" is, as you point out, subject to stops & delays.
Looks like it's telling you that you would have to drive an "average" of 70mph (560 / 8= 70)
When I calculate a drive time ride from home to say Centre Ala. it tells me I'd have to drive an average of 60mph. But, I usually figure on an average of ~50mph to compensate for stops and delays on road trips over 4hrs (even if it's mostly Interstate).

I drive a lot for work and it is pretty close. I do drive over the speed limit but it is hard to beat the time if you need gas and rest stops. If you stay within the speed limits, you better add a little to it.

When I was Driving over the road I would figure my average speed about 10 MPH slower than speed limit. Reason being time to get up to speed/ slow down for stops, slowed traffic around cities, Fuel/ Food/ Rest breaks and such. I would stop and walk around for about 15 min. every two hours or so to get/keep blood flow in the legs which sitting restricts...hoped this helps.

Oh yea, Something else to take into consideration especially this time of year is weather, like snow, as I-80 is subject to slosures in extreme weather...
