Is it just a matter of personal preference? Or has one been proven to be more effective than the other?

Some of both....PICO,s are good too.
Lots of differences on crankbaits
colors
wiggle
sound or rattle
dive speed
All brands will catch crappie....so yes personal preferance has a lot to do with it.....and certain things about the four things I mentioned will effect catch rate at different times and different conditions.
Gonna depend on who you ask...... I personally think color and depth is more important than brand. Others will disagree I expect.

Didn’t Skarlis win on Grenada a few years ago with flicker shads?

Bombers, Strike king and Storm can be thrown in the mix as well . I bought a man out last year and have a mixture . Have caught fish on all of them .
I agree. They all catch fish. Love those PICOs but I do like the price of those Arkie's the best. The Snare Shop.com always has them for 3.60 each. Also, had some painted up from a guy on the site and those worked awesome too
I like to change the hooks on the Arkie's though
Crank baits are crank baits. Most of them will catch fish. Just have to put them at the right depth and use the right colors. Cost is the big thing. back a few years ago, you could pick up a bunch of Bandits and wiggle warts for a couple bucks each if you bought 25-30 in a group from on buyer.
I GO WITH THE CHEAPEST AND COLOR I WANT . I HAVE LEARNED THAT BARNETT WILL EAT UP SOME CRANKS .
