Electronics newbie advice on wiring

I'm replacing the old sonar on the bow of my boat. The old one was spliced into the trolling motor wiring, and I'd much rather run a dedicated power to avoid interference and give me more trolling motor time.

Last year, my console sonar was also giving me trouble I believe was related to power supply. The screen would flicker when there were other things drawing power like the aerator or bilge pump.

So my question is, can I kill two birds with one stone and run one power supply to the bow, with the console unit spliced in halfway? Or will I need to do two separate wires? And if I need two, would you suggest insulating them to prevent interference?

David, get you something like this. Install it up around your console. Run you some 12 gauge wire from cranking battery with 20 amp fuse installed at battery on positive side. Then wire your finders on separate wires to the buss bar with appropriate fuse at each connection.

I have something similar from blue sea uses the blade fuses, works like a charm.

Crays advice is right on as usual. I just performed a similar task with my electronics and it really cleaned the wiring up.

And use twisted pairs for all runs. Its very easy to make your own. YouTube
Be sure to start off with a lot longer than you need as it will get shorter as you twist.

That must be what’s going on inside my spin cast reels ....

I used the same fuse block as Tony, mounted next to cranking battery and ran separate wires to each unit. That being said I would also recommend couple other tips. Use pre-tinned wire that’s sheathed together, will reduce corrosion and oxidation in wet environments, the sheath will give extra protection from rubbing and abrasions if your wire runs are not in tubes. Secondly when running new wire include some extra nylon pull strings so in the future you won’t need fish tape to run extra wires

David, I just posted that one for a example. Do you some searching and might find one a little cheaper. And blue seas also offers one with blade type fuses at each connection. Just depends on how much you want to spend.
