Took a trip to our grandparents place on Houghton lake this weekend. Main objective was hunting and bringing in the dock, with a little fishing on the side.
Looking at the temperature for the weekend, decided that Saturday morning was too cold for either activity (32 degrees!) So settled on fishing near the dam. They are doing maintenance work so the water was real low but after moving around and keying in on structure, finding the crappie was easy. Even Tyler was catching crappie. A lot of little ones went back and kept only eight of the 8 inch size.
Took em home for the fillet board. Next up was showering and dressing warm for an evening with the deer.
Pretty uneventful evening with many bluejays, small birds, and sandhill cranes sounding off all around. Then things got quiet and out in front of me appeared a deer! Beautiful and silent as an image, the six point buck walked out of the brush. No monster, but a sight to behold after sitting with the birds for 2 hours.
I waited and hoped it would swing a bit closer for a shot in a clear area. He was adamant about sticking close to the brush though, and never came close enough. I waited a while longer until almost last light and suddenly the forest erupted with coyote howling. The buck reappeared in front of me, just as spooked as I was and took off. Got text from my brother saying "I'm out."
Guess the coyotes spooked him too. So we left, to our grandparents cabin we went for pasties, crappie and few drinks.Attachment 319140Attachment 319141Attachment 319142
