I had a Trolling Motor issue yesterday

Ever have the Tar ooze from the Transducer and drip on the Boat and Mount that lets the Motor down.. I have had several Bird units Transducers leak.... I dropped the TM and eased up to a Bridge Support and tied off. While fishing in the shade of the bridge I had not pulled the TM back to the Stow position .... The Tar Hardened on the TM LOCK --- It would not release to get the motor back into the stow position. I had to remove the TM from the mount and lay it in the boat before I could put the Boat back on the Trailer... I have to go remove and clean all the Tar from the Transducer on the TM Mount ... I think a Glob of Silicone where the wire goes into the Transducer might help in this matter.

I got it cleaned --- The rope to the Release was so wore it was ready to break - I had replaced the line on Bros and bought a new type with a wire core.... I will put one on the TM on my Boat

Glad you got it worked out Larry. I never heard of a depth finder leaking?

The transducer is mounted on the bottom of the Trolling motor. when the motor is stowed the Ducer sits on its side -- over the Motor Guide Mounting Base.. when the Motor is put in the water , the Lock latches over the front in a slot.. rite where the Transducer Tar leaked

I would say, "That could only happen to you, Larry," but if I did, THEN it would happen to me. Therefore, I will not say that.

I had that same problem years ago. I guess it was caused by pressure on the cable where it went into the transducer. Would leak some on hot days when the boat was covered. Didn't cause any major problems and then one day it just stopped working. I bought another transducer and put on it. Still worked the last time I used it but that has been awhile. It in on the jon boat and I have been using the stick steer.

Transducer are designed to be operated in water they will get hot when on in air The water is a coolant to keep them cool. Manufactures are now adding a feature where you can turn off the transducer when operating out of water.

Glad you got it fixed. I have never had one do that, lucky I guess

I went online to E-Bay after I started this Thread and Have a Bird Helix 7 GPS SI unit on the way... When it gets here I will coat where the wire goes in with Epoxy and seal that boot , That way there will never have a leak because if there was ever a leak you can never stop it
