I’m still around.

I have been on a 2 week trip to Yellowstone. I need a fishing fix bad....LOL. I’m almost home. Since I didn’t spend as much money as I thought I would on the trip I ordered a new addition to the JDM collection. I was wanting another rod for crappie/bluegill...so I have the Tict Ice Cube Rockin ‘Finesse 6’ 9” model coming. Will be interesting to check it out. It has the new Fuji Sic-S guides...which are half the size of normal Sic guides. I think a lot of JDM rods will start using this guide system. Torzite guides are still considered the premium...best you can get....but adding Torzite guides to a rod really takes the price up there. I love Torzite on a rod but the new Sic-S guides will allow me to try out more high end JDM rods. The Rockin ’Finesse is rated for 1/250 to 1/8 ounce jigs.....that rating alone is going to make this an interesting rod.

I got a new rod today myself - a StCroix 6' trout ULF. I already have quite a few bass rods, casting, spinning, finesse, drop shot, so I've been looking at panfish rods. I only have an old Berkley cherrywood ultra-light rig from long ago, with a Daiwa UL7 on it. Vintage gear, they call it. I wanted the StC panfish model, but this trout model is essentially the same - plus I fish the CHattahoochee for trout and this will do double duty.

I've been wanting to get back into bream fishing, so I got some worms and crickets, and caught a few nice shellcrackers last Tues. I never found a real hot spot, just kept moving and getting a few here and there. I just need to figure out the lake better, but the shellcrackers are there, oh yes. I fried the half-dozen I kept today, and man, I forgot all about those largemouth and spots. I went and bought another rod, and am going back in the morning to try and find more of those shellcrackers.

Those rods sound great, but I'll have to Google around to learn more; this StC will haul in a shellcracker I bet. Hoping there is more going on in the bream world, but I guess its the wrong time of year. Got hunting season cranking up, and we're still waiting for cooler fall weather to bring on those fishing opportunities, stripers and bass on top, crappie etc.

Edit: at the risk of sounding ignorant (I am about today's gear), I'd never heard of 'em, but I googled and those do look like great rods..

YeahI know.....this was a bucket list trip for the wife so while I’m sure she would have said do it I chose not to. But...on the way home...through Casper, Wyoming...I stumbled on a jewel I had never heard of...the North Platte River. My nephew and I are going there next year. Seems it is known in trout circles but is never crowded. The fishery holds 2200 to 4000 trout per mile.....and they are big boys not stockers. I stopped off at a state park there and had a look see. I looked in the water there and saw dozens of trout in the 17-19inch range. Then there is the so called Miracle Mile...which is longer than a mile.....but anyway you can get fish there that are in the 25-30 inch range. The Mile is in a remote location but I don’t have to fish there to catch great fish..and numbers. Saw 2 drift boats come by where the pic is at and they were catching some great fish.

Used to pass the Platte a lot when I drove NE, IA and the other states out that way. Duck hunters paradise out that way. Seems I always got to ride the interstate alongside of it for a long time, just to tease me. Have fun with the new rod, and out west when you go. Always wanted to do a drift boat trip.

Congratulations on the trip and the new rod. Those trout will not stand a chance if you guys take the JDM rods out there. The “Sore lip them all” mantra may lead to another shoulder and elbow surgery!! One quick question and I am not meaning to highjack your thread but how does the test pound line ratings compare when using American Braided line? Berkeley Nanofil 4lb is what I mainly use, and if a JDM rod calls for say 2-5lb line, is that compatible for this braid. I also see MAX .06 and PE numbers listed as line ratings. I figure the PE numbers are for the polyester line you reviewed earlier. Thanks for all the information you put out there, the UL bug is catchy.

PE in Japan is what we know as braid. I’ve used a lot of NanoFil and while I have never tested it I’m sure it breaks stronger than its rating. I use a lot of Trout Magnet SOS 2# test line.....it is a great line.....but it breaks at a much higher rating than 2 pounds. I now only use it on my rods that have a rating higher than 3# test. I just don’t want to break a rod because I exceeded the line rating. The new rod I have ordered has a max rating of 2.5# test line. I will only be using IGFA rated line out of Japan for it....their line is not that expensive....plus they make some great lines. Here is a good read about how line ratings are in Japan. I also have a chart about the PE line but can’t locate it right now. Thanks for the comment and I don’t look at as hi jacking a thread at all. It is all about information.....which is what forums are about. I plan on buying a lot more line...reels.....rods....out of Japan and will give reviews on all of it.....hoping I can help just one person out who wants to go down that road. Japanese Silk

I’m not into fly fishing....was 40 years back but no longer own a fly rod. No lead...and no soft plastics allowed in Yellowstone either. Actually the cutthroat are native. Yellowstone Lake is full of lake trout they put in there years ago and are eating the cutthroat so they have an operation going on to eliminate them. As a matter of fact they are in the process of eliminating any trout that is not native to the Yellowstone area...including rainbow.
