I haven't taken notice of what the water temps were, but I have noticed Black Crappie being around the banks & White Crappie hanging out around the channel edges in the Fall. I think they both follow Shad schools back into the creeks/coves, but just prefer different areas & depths to intercept them. Of course, not "all" of them follow the rules :bash, so you may encounter either or both at either or both places & depths. :biggrin
When the water temps start falling below 75 +-, is my gauge. Fish around and under the shad schools.
Not sure about water temp but early to mid October seems to be more of a transition time in my opinion. Just a general observation, entirely non-scientific!

I saw this several months ago and decided to somewhat follow it.

I don't know what temp they moved shallow but if your lake does the fall turnover. Good fishing won't start until the turn over is done. Usually lasts a week or so.
