Another crappie day 7/15/2018

Phil and I landed 17 keeper sized crappie his morning and one Largemouth bass. Lights Out Slab Slayers and Glitter Critter were the only colors that we could get the fish to bite.

we are in our summer pattern for sure now with the water temps reaching 87 degrees by 10 am. It was 84 when we started at daylight. No water flow for a good portion of the morning. We fished 15-25 feet deep over stumps and rock piles.

Phil caught a nice 14.5” white crappie while my biggest was 13.75”. The first tarp crappie in the new boat. I had a tarp Shellcracker last week.

Congratulations on the first 14+inch Crappie in the new boat. I am sure it is the first of many more to come. Do you catch White Crappie down that way much? Most of what I see from your pictures look to be thick healthy Black Crappie. You are right about the Summer Pattern, it is in full swing here. The evening bite has been decent for me when they are pulling water for power generation.

Black crappie are the predominant species here on Chickamauga, but back in the 80's we caught probably more white crappie. I don't really know why the black crappie are so dominant now. But, we may go 4 or 5 trips and never catch a white crappie, but there are times when we catch multiply white crappie on a trip. I don't know if the black/white crappie hybridize or not, but the 14.5 inch white crappie in the pic that Phil caught has the body shape more like a black crappie and the vertical bars of the white crappie are not quite as easily seen as on most. Also, most white crappie are longer, bigger mouths, and thinner than the blacks. But, if you count the dorsal spines, you can clearly see that the white crappie has 6 spines and the 13.75 inch black crappie that I am holding has 8 spines on its dorsal fin. Go figure?

Looks like I'm gonna have to fish some early daylight hours this week... :biggrin
