Saturday, North Landing River, 51 small crappie.
Headed out for only the 9th time this year. Bought a new house two months ago and have been busy on weekends not to mention my new marriage (last September) and my wife having a 10 and 12 year old. Anyways, I only live 7 miles from the ramp at West Neck Creek off of the North Landing River so even though I have never had much luck with bigger crappie (rarely anything over a pound, biggest ever there around 1lb 4oz) I wanted to get my Lund on the water which I hadn't done since a trip to Buggs over two months ago.
Had good luck early with Kalin's Money jig then got a few off of electric chicken with a paddle tail before switching and doing best on a BGBS Monkey Milk. All were caught from 4' down to 1' down in around 6' of water. Biggest was just shy of 11", lots of dinks. I showed surface water temp at 85-87. I took a run down to the tall bridge near the old Pungo Ferry area, always scanned fish under the cement bases for the pylons but it was always too windy to fish them. Winds were finally light so I gave it a try. Caught my first crappie ever there but only the one along with a few white perch and striper. There's definitely a lot of fish under this bridge but the way the cement island is that the pylons anchor into makes it tough to get at them.
On a side note, the house I bought has a small lake around 1.5 acres behind it. I can grab my pole and walk out my back door and fish. It has crappie in it but the biggest I have caught so far is only 9". Also have caught catfish, white perch, and bass. May have to get a kayak so I can try the deeper water. I know the water is around 10' behind my house around 50' out.
