Crappie and White Bass, 6/18/2018
Pat Ryan and I made a quick fishing trip this morning just after daylight. We quit and I was home before 10:00. I love short quick trips in the summer time. Beat the heat is my motto. Anyway, we targeted White Bass early and Crappie for about 30-40 minutes before we stopped fishing. We both caught several Whites on crappie jigs and spoons. But, the bite wasn't as fast and furious as it has been in the past couple of weeks. They are either getting wise to our offerings or they are beginning to leave this area. It has been fun and we have released every fish that we have caught back in there.
Then we went to the Wolftever bridge to vertical jig for crappie. Again, the bite was very slow and light, but we both managed to catch a couple of keepers and a couple of shorts as well. All fish that we caught were deep except one slimy channel catfish that was shallow or at least it hit my jig about 3 seconds after it hit the water. I thought for a couple of minutes that it might be a bass, but it never did come up to jump. That stupid fish bit my thumb several times while I was trying to get the jig out of its stupid face. It didn't bring blood, and maybe it was payback for me just playing the thing nearly to exhaustion before landing it. I also caught a yellow bass as well. They have been scarce back in the creek this year.
Pat and I laughed at each other all morning. It was pleasantly cool with a gently breeze blowing on us and we each really had a great time. We teased each other over who caught the biggest White bass and I told him that I thought that his biggest was nearly as big as mine, although it was probably a little bigger. LOLOL I do know that Pat caught the biggest crappie which was about 12" or so.
Info for all that read my posts: My boat has motor issues and is in the shop. I was told that it was a 4 week wait before that could even get to it. It is that way at a couple more places that I would allow my boat to be checked. There are some places that I won't take it to for various reasons. So, I am at the mercy of my fishing buddies that I have taken out so many times. I will be available to go early in the mornings just so I get off the water before it gets too hot. If not, then I will get a month or so of rest and relaxation. I can sense that the crappie are breathing a sigh of relief. Grin.
