Poverty point state park reservoir in Delhi la

New to the group and crappie fishing
Has anybody fished poverty point and have any tips. I'm going at the end of june and some help would be appreciated.

I used to fish Poverty through April into middle of May when the lake was new 15 years ago. There wasn’t a better fishing hole anywhere. In my opinion, the lake is now just a shadow of its former self except for a couple of weeks during the spawn. Even in its heyday, the crappie seem to disappear when the weather got hot. Don’t know if you will be camping at the park or not, but if so, I would try night fishing in the south end of the lake around piers with night lights. They used to require a $6.00 permit to night fish but don’t know if that applies if you are a park camper. The lake is loaded with all kinds and sizes of catfish if all else fails. I caught one there that weighed 21 pounds 9 ounces on my jig pole with 8# line & a Bobby Garland blue thunder baby shad.:dono

Unless they have changed the rules, you don't have to pay for the night fishing license if you're staying at the park. I agree that catfish (and bass and bream) will be your best bet in the summer. Don't know why but it's hard to catch a white perch there this time of year. But if you try, I'd fish the deep channels on the southeast side of the lake.

Thanks Tbone. I'm going to be doing some catting i am good at that. Hopefully i can find a few decent crappie. I'm definitely going to give it a shot

Don’t fish poverty, but welcome!

And i’ll add a “Big Welcome”:biggrin also. TBone is dead on ! That’s the area of the lake I was referring to in my initial answer. You’ll enjoy your stay because all the park personnel are very nice and accommodating. Be sure to make a visit to the north marina and park store. They have a little of everything including live bait if you use it. A very nice facility. Only about a five minute or so drive from the RV park straight up Hwy 17. Hope you catch ‘em !

There's a good population of hybrid strippers in PP right now. You shouldn't have any trouble catching a mess of them in the canals, too.

Cool thanks for all the helpful tips. We are going to be staying for 4 nights in the cabins over the water. We normally go there once a year just haven't been able to catch some crappie. Maybe this year

Lots of shallow water, and just a few deep places... Would seem like it would be easier to hem them up there than it is! I usually head to the first little cove on the left, out from the landing and just past the pilings to catch shad for bait... Throw a cast net in there, and you can fill it up in a hurry... Oh, and don't run fast until you know where you are going...
