I ain't seen no threadfin shad in a long time.. What happened to them.. Carp? I dunno. TWRA says the carp ain't the problem and I somewhat believe them maybe. Ky marine folks say the same thing. I have seen and lived cycles of the good and the bad of fishing Ky Lake. Maybe we just in one of those bad cycles. I had rather blame the carp.

I have witnessed pre-Asian carp bad cycles as well, but we still had bait fish and the food chain was not dismantled.
There is no absolute way to know the actual population of a species of fish, it would be great to know the numbers for prior to their arrival on the crime scene. Now, it's just a guessing game due to several factors. I know that there are folks working very hard at this opportunity. But from a fisherman's point of view, things are looking grim.

I’ve been fishing Ky Lake here in TN since the late 40’s. Been through the up’s and down’s too but this Asian carp issue is a totally different threat than what we have ever experienced in my lifetime. Now we have had a “tremendous” spawn of Zebra mussels in 2017 according to Ky Biologists. If they get a foothold in Ky Lake we have more issues than just Asian carp.
Yeah, if you think about it .... there are cycles that the fish go thru, great years then lean years and then rinse/repeat. That's common knowledge .... BUT, add in the "Carp" and their territorial disruption, food chain disruption, biomass replacement, and their growth rate & fecundity ..... and they simply exacerbate the situation, making the great years not so great as in the past & the lean years even worse.
IMHO ... unless we find a biological weapon that renders them sterile, and doesn't affect other species, we're fighting a losing battle. And if we did find/use such a weapon, it will still take decades for those fish to die out on their own or be harvested by the commercial anglers. And they'd still be a nuisance and a danger to the fishing/boating population during that time period.
Do your research, the weapon is called the Herpes virus. Australia has been experimenting for 7 years, and will be starting the actual implementation this year. Very good info out there about this.Quote:
